The Use Of Spironolactone To Treat Acne

For women who have a pattern of acne flares during menstruation, the use of spironolactone (Aldactone) combined with a birth control pill can be helpful. It has some anti-androgen effects and if taken approximately a week before menstruation, it can prevent acne flares.

  • Menstrual irregularity

CONTRAINDICATIONS

  • Pregnancy
  • Renal insufficiency
  • Abnormal menstrual bleeding
  • Use of ACE inhibitors
  • Family history of ovarian cancer, breast cancer, or uterine cancer
